The Spirit of Jim Williams Lives On
Many years ago, Linear Technology started to include gray-paper inserts in electronics magazines. Each 2-page insert provided a short application note that covered some aspect of analog circuitry. The inserts came punched for a 3-hole binder, so readers could remove and save them. I used to have quite a collection, but the Internet made it easier to find the app notes online. Jim Williams' name appeared on many of those inserts and on paper app notes Linear Tech gave away for free. The latest edition of EDN magazine included such an insert, "Design Note 498," but not by Jim.
Sadly, Jim Williams died of a stroke in mid 2011, yet his legacy and spirit live on in the new book, "Analog Circuit Design," edited by Jim and his colleague Bob Dobkin. My copy arrived yesterday and it's a fitting tribute to Jim. The 932-page book compiles 41 of Linear Tech's applications and each app note has its own chapter. The book divides information into two sections; one that covers power management (19 app notes) and a second that covers data conversion, signal conditioning, and High-frequency & RF (22 app notes). Jim's name appears in many of the chapter bylines.
About two years ago I talked with Jim and Linear Tech's John Hamburger about publishing a book about power electronics. Jim had the idea for an encyclopedia-like collection of several volumes that would include everything he knew about power electronics. John and I suggested Jim aim a bit lower and limit his first book to a small range of power electronics. Jim wasn't happy with our suggestion and I suspect he decided to craft a book or books on his own terms. As luck would have it, he and Bob Dobkin created this single-volume that covers a range of topics with good depth and lasting value.
Jim Williams contributed an Introduction in his usual style and he noted:
The topics presented are survivors of a selection process involving a number of disparate considerations. These include reader interest, suitability for publication, time and space constraints, and lasting tutorial value. Additionally, a 10-year useful lifetime for application notes is desired. This generally precludes narrowly-focused efforts. Topics are board, with a tutorial and design emphasis that (ideally) reflects the reader's long-term interest. ...it is significant that some of the material presented is still in high demand years after initial publication.
The application notes include the original information as well as Jim's somewhat-famous scope photos, probably taken with a Polaroid camera before the days--or in spite of--digital storage scopes. When I worked at EDN magazine, which published many of Jim's articles--we used to rib Jim about the burn marks on the face of his scope tube. You can see them in many of the photos in this wonderful volume.
Anyone who works with analog electronics--and those who hope to--should own a copy of this book. It's a shame Jim isn't here to autograph our copies.
